If you are looking for a new smartphone or laptop, you will surely see ads that offer 4G compatible devices. You may even be using a 4G compatible device.
So what is 4G? What is it different from 3G? And currently 4G has present in Vietnam yet?
4G is the short name for the fourth generation of wireless networking, the connection of mobile communication that allows everything like Voice, Data, Online Games and high-speed IP-based multimedia streaming on mobile devices with such high speed as cable transmission. We’ve witnessed the success of 3G from 2G, which is a transfer from analogue to digital transmission. Providing data services such as SMS and email for smartphones.
Let’s think about wireless generation and the benefits such as faster speeds and more different features. 3G technology we use today allows video streams, files and music downloads, and reach from 600kb/s to 1.4Mb/s. With 4G you can do the same thing but at much higher speeds, bandwidth is the key to opening up many new applications in the future.
There are currently two core technologies of 4G network: WiMax and Long Term Evolution (LTE). WiMax is a wireless connection standard developed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and LTE is standardized by 3GPP, a division of GSM Alliance. Both WiMax and LTE use state-of-the-art transceiver technologies to improve the tuning and performance of equipment and networks. However, each technology uses a different frequency band.
How are 3G and 4G different?
- Real-time connection: The real-time connection of 4G networks is higher consideration than 3G. Specifically, 4G network has a simple core network, all network addresses with flat architecture will require less transmission equipment. The latency of 4G networks is also several times lower than 3G. This means you can download news, movies, web games … more quickly.
- About download speed: According to theory, 4G networks have the ability to connect up to 10 times faster than 3G, giving users access to the Internet extremely fast. Speed of loading movies, downloading music … is also faster than normal many times.
- About upload speed: The upload speed of the 3G network is only 2Mb/s in fact while with 4G network, you will experience upload speed extremely fast, even when you need to upload files with huge capacity. It also does not take much time, with actual upload speed at an average of 8 Mb/s.
So is 4G available in Vietnam at this time?
The answer is “Yes”. In particular, 2017 is considered to be a development year for nationwide 4G implement as big 3 telecom companies: VNPT, Viettel and MobiFone are competing to provide customers with best 4G experiences. The strongest evidence is that the major operators have implemented 4G coverage in key markets in Vietnam and released 4G SIM to the people.
The evolution to the 4G generation is simply a preparation for a powerful explosion of demand for large data resources.
The increase of user demand for mobile data leads to slow 3G service. According to Ericsson reports, every smartphone user in the world uses 1.4GB of average mobile data every month by 2015. That figure is expected to grow to 1.9GB per month in 2016. In Asia alone, each customer uses an average of 1.7GB of cellular data per month in 2016 and that number is expected to increase to 9.5GB by 2022.
These changes show that the move to 4G is an indispensable trend. At 10 times faster than 3G, 4G networks can meet the growing demand of mobile users. In theory, the highest 4G network today (4G LTE-A technology) has a download speed of 300 Mb / s and upload speed is 150 Mb / s, seven times faster than the speed. The existing HSPA + 3G network currently has a download speed of 42 Mbps and upload of 22 Mbps.
However, the best advantage of 4G networks is that it can perfectly replace fixed Internet connections (including fiber optic lines) with inferior speed, wider coverage, and Very mobile.
To officially launch 4G services, operators have well prepared. MobiFone has completly upgraded its present Core network. Vinaphone has installed more than 10,000 nationwide stations. The coverage rate of VinaPhone 4G by population in many provinces/cities is 100% (national average is 85%). In 2017, VinaPhone has committed to deploy in 63 provinces and cities, 4G coverage to districts, resorts … deployed quickly about 21,000 4G stations ensure wide coverage 4G.
Viettel informed that as soon as having the license to provide 4G telecom services, Viettel had embarked on equipment investment, infrastructure construction with a commitment to cover 4G. With a nationwide coverage strategy, wide area coverage and high quality, Viettel will provide best services to all customers in all provinces and cities. Regarding the tariff, Viettel is expected to offer cheaper rates than it does now.
In addition to investing in infrastructure, operators are also building digital content based on 4G platform. To bring new technology to market soon, operators have completed business plans with useful services including high speed Data and other services such as Broadcast TV on eMBMS platform, Unicast picture, 4K video service, MobiTV …
It’s all about preparation for an explosion of digital content as well as a big competition among network operators in the future. That will create a springboard for Vietnam to catch up as well as catching up with Industrial Revolution 4.0 where everything will be connected (Internet of Thing) and virtual reality.
