As one of the world’s fastest-rising cloud software and services companies, Virtustream is trusted by enterprises worldwide to migrate, run and manage mission-critical applications in the cloud, including SAP. Virtustream customers include marquis enterprises such as The Coca-Cola Company, Domino Sugar, Heinz, Hess Corporation, Kawasaki, Lexmark, Scotts Miracle-Gro and a global footprint of service provider partners who use Virtustream software to power their cloud offerings.
Virtustream’s xStream is a cloud management platform (CMP) designed for enterprises, service providers, and government agencies and offers Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). It enables service providers to offer enterprise cloud services and governments to run secure public clouds—all backed by workload performance service level agreements (SLAs), consumption pricing, and cloud efficiency. It was created to meet the complex requirements of enterprises including security, compliance, performance, efficiency, and consumption-based billing in private, public, or hybrid cloud platforms.
Virtustream’s xStream is available in three ways: as software, as an appliance, and as a managed service. It uses patented Virtustream micro virtual machine (µVM) technology, which supports multiple hypervisors, enables granular billing and chargeback, and is up to 30 percent more efficient than traditional virtualization. The Virtustream cloud app works with existing hardware and virtualization software. Virtustream xStream can be hosted in Virtustream facilities so customers can significantly reduce capital and operational costs.
Enterprise-Class Cloud IaaS
Virtustream’s IaaS solutions offer highly scalable resources that can be adjusted on demand, allowing for workloads to change unexpectedly. They also offer the automation of administrative tasks (maintenance), dynamic scaling, desktop virtualization, and policy-based services. Virtustream charges based on the virtual machine space that is used, thus eliminating the capital expense of having to add and upgrade deployment of in-house hardware and software.
The Virtustream enterprise-class cloud powered by xStream software is an IaaS cloud-computing solution that offers the security, reliability, compliance, and performance of a customized, dedicated private cloud that is combined with the efficiency, flexibility, and scalability of a public multi-tenant cloud. The xStream management software uses Virtustream’s patented µVM technology that makes the infrastructure virtualization more efficient by ensuring cost reductions and optimized performances across an array of application workloads.
Virtustream’s enterprise-class cloud means users can run complex, mission-critical, legacy, and web-scale applications without having to rewrite any of the applications. This includes hundreds of programs and applications like SAP, Oracle, and Microsoft.
The Virtustream enterprise-class cloud offers guaranteed SLAs for both the performance and availability of applications. This means enterprises can run business-critical applications with clearly defined, reliable performance and response-time guarantees. The application monitoring capabilities of the enterprise-class cloud afford business and information technology (IT) operations the required visibility to run an enhanced, complex infrastructure with complete confidence. Through the application management and monitoring offerings, Virtustream shares expertise in the complete complex management and maintenance of enterprise applications in the cloud, freeing up IT employees to work on more important projects.
In addition to offering self-service resources and provisional resources on demand through the customer portal, Virtustream was the first cloud-computing provider to fully integrate Intel’s trusted execution technology (TXT) geo-tagging and geo-fencing to ensure that application resources are executing at optimal levels in secure, trusted facilities 24/7. Integrated into Virtustream’s provided services are backup and disaster recovery, offering geographically dispersed data centers for redundancies to enable rapid disaster recovery.
Enterprise Security and Risk Management
In the past, risk management has taken an audit-oriented approach focusing on a company’s assets that are isolated by their function or location. It involved regularly scheduled reviews of security system, compliance, certification and accreditation (C&A), and measuring and qualifying capabilities.
Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) with Virtustream seamlessly automates many of the processes and continually addresses the entire risk horizon across all of the categories of vulnerability. This includes risk areas like: IT risk, regulatory compliance risk, operational risk, financial risk, and reputational risk. The solution collects data, monitors systems and operations, and then assimilates and reports in a real-time, continuous capacity so that an organization knows of immediate and imminent disruptions or threats and is given detailed information to know of possible future events in plenty of time to make preparations and analyze possible impacts and costs involved.
Virtustream Security Solutions offer software for ERM, cyber situational awareness, and regulatory-compliance tools for commercial, public sector, and service provider markets. Virtustream’s continuous risk and compliance monitoring solutions provide standards-compliant capabilities to assess and mitigate risk within an enterprise, government, and/or service provider on a proactive basis. The ERM solution continually monitors existing IT, private clouds, and public clouds, creating a single, integrated solution for even the most complex environment.
ERM shares advances that have been made in a variety of enterprise IT hardware and software approaches, to include cloud computing, big-data storage and retrieval, and sensor standardization and integration. The solution can securely manage and deploy applications in the cloud with secure protection for network and host-level applications, including isolated application and data zones, integrated security information and event management (SIEM), and governance risk compliance (GRC) policies.
Patented µVM Technology
Virtustream created and patented a unit of measurement that fairly and accurately measures the actual consumption of cloud resources in xStream-powered clouds. It works like the kilowatt hour (KWh) consumption metric unit that measures a home’s electric bill. It is a more detailed and accurate measurement of computer, memory, network, and storage resources than the virtual machine-hour measurement that many cloud providers use to charge their customers.
The Virtustream patented µVM (micro Virtual Machine), also known as µVMTM (micro virtualization minute to minute), means customers pay for the actual usage of computing resources rather than Virtual Machine hours. The µVM goes beyond being just a unit of measure because it is part of the design and management principle for migrating existing applications and IT to the cloud. A power company uses KWh requirements at different times and different locations to make decisions of when to build and use new generators, transformers, or power plants. The µVM allows the xStream software to make decisions regarding resource placement, sizing, and scaling across overall cloud operations to optimize delivery as required by actual usage. It eliminates previously used artificial sizing boundaries and delivers resources in what’s actually being used rather than in larger unit sizes (that are more than what it required or more than what is actually being used). This makes the entire system operate more efficiently and also means customers get true consumption-based pricing and pay only for the resources that an enterprise actually uses.
